I got the right answer, but for the wrong reason. The question was: If I have a Chimeric Idol with Parallax Dementia on it, what happens at the end of the turn when the Idol de-animates? The answer is that the Idol will die. The real reason is that when an ability uses a phrase such as "that creature" or "enchanted creature", it doesn't actually care whether the permanent is a creature, only that it's the correctly referenced permanent. This is a slight extension of the rule on Delayed Abilities (it does mean that Animate Artifact will need a slightly different wording to make it work properly - I'll ask about that). SHORT ANSWERS: ======================================================================= ** Urza's Armor has a replacement ability, not a triggered ability. It's a good combo with Manabarbs, as it will prevent all damage that the Manabarbs does to you. ** Word of Command is being asked about. It obviously has some "issues". Go with the rulings in D'Angelo's for now, even if they may contradict stuff I've said recently. LONG ANSWERS: ======================================================================= [Ron Shortt, asking about Parallax Wave] >The following situation arose in our tournament last weekend. Player A has a >Parallax Wave and Opalescence in play. Player B attempts to Vendetta the Wave. >Player A then uses the Wave to remove itself from the game to counter the >Vendetta. I said that this was legal since "if Parallax Wave is in play" was >satisfied at the time of resolution of the effect. Of course the Wave >immediately returned to play but was a new instance (with all fading counters) >and therefore not the original legal target of the Vendetta. Was I correct? No. The Wave can't return to play, due to its current wording. Parallax Wave's current wording is: |Fading 5. |Remove a fade counter from ~this~: Remove target creature from the game |if ~this~ is in play. |When ~this~ leaves play, each player returns toplay all cards other |than ~this~ he or she owns removed from the game with ~this~. ----- [Graham Seymore, asking about Parallax Wave] >So if I have 2 Waves in play with the Opalescence. Can I even with the >errata remove Wave1 with Wave2 and remove Wave2 with Wave one and they both >will return with all fade counters? No. The first Wave will be removed from the game. The second Wave won't be, because it will only be removed if the first Wave is in play, and it already left play. You can do something like what you want with three Waves. ----- [Ole Kofoed Hansen, asking about Spur Grappler] >How does Spur Grappler's ability ( ~this~ gets +2/+1 as long as you >control no untapped lands.) work? > >Does it "recalculate" all the time just like Nightmare or Keldon Warlord, >so that it will be overridden by Sorceress Queen's ability even if >I tap my last land after SQ's ability resolved? Yes. It's a static ability, and so it's applied in timestamp order, just like the Queen's ability. This means that the Grappler will always be 0/2 if it's Queened, as its effect is applied before the Queen's effect (because the Queen's ability can only be played on it after it came into play). ----- [Vince Herman, asking about rules and Necropotence] >Where do you get the latest errata? http://www.wizards.com/DCI/Oracle.asp >Where do you get the comprehensive rulebook? http://www.wizards.com/magic/MTG_Rules.asp >A player with >Necropotence claimed that he could discard down to 7 before he picked up >his pile of necro cards, letting him go into the next turn with 10 or so >cards in hand. He can't do this. You get the cards from Necropotence in your End of Turn step, but you don't discard until your Cleanup step (which is after the end of turn step). >Q3 - What do you use (electronic gadget-wise) to bring Oracle and the >comprehensive rulebook to tourneys? Generally, I use a brain. I guess it almost counts as a gadget. ----- [Ed Phillips, asking about Cowardice] >Can the Cowardice effect be used to save a creature from the Bully? Yes. The creature you target with the Bully's ability will be returned to your hand by the Cowardice, rather than being damaged by the Bully. ----- [Talon, asking about control] > Firstly, can a permanent in play be controlled by more than one player >simultaneously??? Please give an explanation for any answers whether yes or >no. No. Each permanent has precisely one controller. There's no way to give a permanent more than one controller. > Player A has a white knight in play under his/her control with a holy >strength enchanting this creature. Player B has a preacher in play and taps >the preacher thusly taking over the white knight. Player B will now control >the white knight and the holy strength enchantment will accompany the white >knight but who controls the enchantment??? Its previous controller. Nothing caused its controller to change. It's just the same as if you played the enchantment on the creature in the first place - you still control it.
