If anyone from this list will be there, please come up and say Hi - it would be nice to put faces to names and e-mail addresses. ** I won't answer any questions about supposed Invasion cards until the prerelease. FOLLOWUP TO PREVIOUS REPLIES: ======================================================================= ** We still don't have a reply on exactly how Forgotten Lore works (I guess the Rules Team, um, forgot). I'll ask again and pass the reply on when we get it. SHORT ANSWERS: ======================================================================= ** For a complete list of banned/restricted lists, go to http://www.wizards.com/dci/judge/resources/br_list.asp ** The current DCI recommendation for Sealed Deck events is that they should use a 5-land swap (give 5 basic lands to the TO, and he gives you 5 back). This is only a recommendation, but it is what is done at Grand Prix and Pro Tour Qualifier events. ** It's not possible to generate infinite anything. You can generate lots of things, even many things, but not infinite things. ** Library of Leng will not replace a discard that's part of a cost. It will soon receive a new Oracle wording to reflect this. ** Replacement and prevention effects use the same basic timing rules, but each have some special additional rules. LONG ANSWERS: ======================================================================= [Martin Roach, asking about Parallax Wave] >So If when the the ability resolves Parallax wave isn't in play then the >ability is countered on resolution. Well, it's not "countered on resolution", it just "fails to do anything". The result is the same, of course. ----- [Steve Lord, asking for some clarification] >Clarification: if I animate something like a Spawning Pool, then you >Animate Land it, it's still black, correct? Correct. >> ** The 250 line limit is just a limit. You don't have to aim for it. :-) > >Just curious, does that limit apply to your NetRep replies as well, Paul? Yes, it applies to me as well. It's good, because it gives me a hint to reply more often. >> No, you can't do that. The Furnace is applied to the entire event at >> once, doubling all the damage. The player is taking 6, no matter what. >> Note that prevention effects "prevent the next 3 damage..." or "prevent >> all damage..." don't have any restriction on how many times they can be >> applied (redirection effects are all replacements). > >*scratches head* I hope this isn't saying what I _think_ it's >saying. "Prevention effects don't have any restriction on how many times >they can be applied?" That's correct. Note that this only applies to abilities that don't use "instead", but use "prevent" instead of "instead". This is fine, as they cannot re-invoke themselves (because they delete whatever they alter). ----- [Mat Brown, asking about Bethmo] >> Once Bethmo gets replaced, the FAQ writing will be back to normal. For >> Invasion, I'm sure Dave and I will chip into the FAQ to make sure it >> contains everything it needs. > >Why is Bethmo being replaced? She's retiring from her job and moving on to other work. And, as far as FAQs are concerned, we've just been given the Invasion FAQ to review. ----- [Bob Terrell, asking about the rulebook] >> > ** The "may=modal" rule has been revoked, because it was stupid. > >BTW, has this made its way into some version of the CompRules? Not yet. There's a rulebook revision planned for early Autumn. ----- [Ingo Warnke, asking about prevention effects] >I think that's not true. The event it replaces is 'a source would deal damage >to a creature or player'. If something deals damage to several creatures at >once, or more sources deal damage at once (combat damage, for example), Furnace >will apply to each such event seperately. The current wording was *specifically >made* to do so, because they wanted 419.8a to apply. Not true. The Rules Team have never considered this problem before - it simply hasn't been asked before. The ordering of replacement and prevention effects is done on a per-permanent basis. This causes problems with redirection effects. 419.8a is badly worded - it could produce some very silly results if applied literally. I'll ask about this, too. Having Cho-Manno ever be damaged is a situation that the Rules Team won't allow - it's too far from the rational interpretation of the card text. ----- [Ed Phillips, asking about tapped artifacts] >Can I activate an ability of a tapped artifact if the ability doesn't >include "TAP" in the cost? Yes. ----- [Marco Viggiano, asking about Celestial Dawn] >if i have a celestial dawn in play, can i use the ability of a Kor Haven >(non-basic land)? No. It will be a basic plains. You can use the Plains' ability to produce {W}, of course. ----- [Patrick Perez, asking about Exhume and multiplayer] >I have a creature in my graveyard but my opponent doesn't. Can I cast >Exhume: Yes, of course. It's not targeted, so you only have to pay the {1}{B} in order to play it. >We've got a small group of friends and have come up with our own doubles >rules (based on a number of different web sources). >The main problem is that we've added the following as a main phase option: >The "Move a Card" phase allows you to tap any untapped permanent and pass >control of the permanent to your teammate. > >Now I've got a Rubinia Soulsinger: > >I gain control of a creature and on the next turn "Move a Card" the >creature to my team mate, relinquishing control of the creature. The turn >after that, Rubinia untaps and I can control another creature, etc, etc, I would rule against this, for the following reason - in your "move a card" phase, you are transferring a layer of control to another player, rather than adding a new layer of control. So, in this case, controlling the creature still depends on Rubinia being untapped. This isn't a truly official ruling, because it's for multiplayer, but it's how I'd play it. ----- [Rudolf Sukeandra, asking about Smokestack] >Case: Smokestack with N Soot Counters. >Do the sacrifice processed as 1 action with N permanents sacrificed at the >same time, or N separated actions with 1 permanent each sacrificed 1 by 1? At the same time. >Case: Opponent's Treachery on one of my creature when i have an active >smokestack with 2 soot counter. Can he sacrifice both cards ? Yes. ----- [Ed Phillips, asking two questions] >Withdraw - can I play it if there is only one targetable creature in play? No. It has two targets, so you must name both of them when you announce it. >Mind Swords - can I play it if it's the only card in my hand? Yes, of course. ----- [David Zhou, asking about Parallax Tide] >Hi i have a question on the cards parallax tide. if i tide out 5 of my >opponents lands that were tapped, then my opponent disenchanted my tide and >bring back his 5 lands, do they come back tapped or untapped? Untapped, just the same as if they came into play normally (unless of course some of them say "X comes into play tapped", in which case those lands come into play tapped). ----- [Joseph Fernandes, asking about Chimeric Idol] >Scenario: I have two Chimeric Idols in play. I turn one of them into an >artifact creature by tapping all my lands. Is it legal to turn the other >into an artifact creature while all my lands are tapped? Yes, of course. Tapping the lands is part of the effect, not part of the cost (tapping the lands is a side-effect of turning it into a creature).
