For reference, it's the "dependent effect moves forward" version that's been adopted by the rules team (in order to ignore problems generated by Grave Servitude) SHORT ANSWERS: ======================================================================= ** For naming sources of damage, there's an additional ruling: You may also name anything referenced as dealing damage (this covers Chain Lightning and a Vanguard card I can't remember). This hasn't made it into the rulebook, as there hasn't been a rulebook revision since. ** Don't even think about trying to get the continuous effect rules and rulings changed. It's simply not going to happen - we know they're not perfect, but they're just about workable, and the weird situations that can happen are incredibly unlikely to come up in tournament play. LONG ANSWERS: ======================================================================= [, asking about drawing cards] >I've been playing MTG for about 5 years, and I only >seem to run into problems when playing with my brother >as far as rules go. For instance, when you run out of >cards in your hand, do you go to your library and draw >back up to seven, or do you simply draw one card each >turn and hope for the best? One card each turn, of course. ----- [David Zhou, asking about Dual Nature and Legends] >I want to know what happens when a Dual Nature is in play already. Then i >cast in a >Multani, Maro-Sorcerer . Since he is a Legend and i make a token of him, does >the non-copy Multani gets destroyed? No. The copy-Multani gets destroyed due to the Legend rule. This won't destroy the real Multani. ----- [Da Twink Daddy, asking about CEs] >4) Q: [mainly for Jeff or Paul] The CE generated by an instant that >reads "target creature gets -2/-2 until end of turn" that has resolved >is dependent on the piece of cardboard being a creature right? No. Its not even dependent on it remaining a piece of cardboard. The only thing that depends on creatureness is targeting the spell. > If not, >I have a serious problem with the way dependancies in general are >handled, and the way 2x Op/Hum is handled in specific. 2xOpalexcence+Humility is not handled correctly in the rulings we have, compared to the actual CE rules. However, for various reasons, these rulings are considered correct (mainly to keep the Rules Team sane). ----- [David Fure, with some questions] >1) I have a Masticore in play and a Squee, Goblin Nabob in the graveyard. At >the beginning of my upkeep can I return the squee to my hand and then >discard it to pay for the Masticore or must I discard a card from my hand >before the Squee is returned? I have argued the payment for the masticore >does not need to be made until resolution. So I can put the Masticore's >triggered ability on the stack first, followed by the Squee's. The Squee >resolves first and is back in my hand in time for the Masticore. That's correct. > Also in general, how do I know if a payment needs to be made at >announcement or upon resolution? Look for a colon (:) on the card. This shows an activated ability, and all costs (everything before the colon) must be paid on announcement. >2) I attack with a Weatherseed Treefolk. My opponent casts a Humble on it, >and blocks, which puts it in the Graveyard. Does the Humble remove the WT's >ability to return to my hand? Yes. Humble removes all abilities, so nothing can trigger to return the Treefolk. >3) Is there an alternative site I can go to get The Card Rulings found at >crystalkeep.com in a format such as Excel, Access, a comma delimited file or >some other similar format. It would make it much more usable for me. You can get the HTML versions, and do search and replace to chop them up to comma delimited for Excel or Access. ----- [Denise Keppel, asking two questions] >1) He attacked me and I blocked with a drudge >skeleton. I then tapped the manna, regenerated it, >and placed it in summoning sickness. On my turn, I >attacked with it. He said that the creature was still >in summoning sickness because creatures have to go >through a turn in summoning sickness. Regeneration doesn't give summoning sickness, it just taps the creature. Only things that come into play or things that change control gain summoning sickness. In any case, the sickness wears off at the start of each of your turns. >2) He placed an enchantment that turned all forests >(11 at the time) into creatures, claimed that nothing >I could do would kill them, and that all new forests >were creatures also. I maintained that only the 11 >were creatures, and that my reign of terror should >have killed the creatures and dealt two damage for >each land. You were a third right. All Forests, including new ones, would be creatures, and your Reign of Terror would not have killed them, because they are not green few things that animate lands gives them a colour. You could have used Pestilence to kill them, of course. ----- [Duane Serge, asking about Story Circle] >>>Can a Story Circle be used to prevent the damage from a Blastoderm attack? >>Yes. >Can you explain to me how this is possible Simple. Activate the Story Circle (assuming you named "green"), and choose the Blastoderm when the ability resolves. Story Circle isn't targeted, so you can choose the Blastoderm just fine. ----- [Johan Sonck, asking about Land Equilibrium] >Sorry to bother you with another Land Equilibrium question, but does >it also count for lands returning to play after having been removed >from the game by Parallax Tide? Yes, it will (for lands owned by your opponent, not for lands owned by you). ----- [Jeff Stager, asking about counters on lands] >I cast Animate Land on a land of mine. >I cast Thrive, choosing to put a counter on the land. >The land is now a 3/3 with a +1/+1 counter, making it 4/4. >At end of turn, what happens? Is the land a 1/1 creature forever(barring any >future effects)? Is it just a land with a +1/+1 counter on it? It's a land with a +1/+1 counter on it that's doing nothing at the moment. ----- [Jacek Gadomski, asking about regeneration] >Let say I have a creature in play with Sadistic Glee on it. Then I play >Absolute Grace. Does Sadistic Glee is no longer valid and goes to the >graveyard? If it goes to the graveyard, what's about counters, do they >remain on the creature or not? It goes to the graveyard, because it has an illegal enchantee. The counters stay on the creature. >2. I have Ancient Silverback with regeneration already paid in play. My >opponent then plays Expunge targeting Silverback. So regeneration shield is >removed. No, the Silverback dies, as Expunge doesn't allow regeneration. The shield is useless against it. > Then he plays Expunge second time targeting Silverback again. In >response I pay G to add regeneration to Silverback. In my oppinion the stack >resolves and Silverback get the regeneration before Expunge resolves. So it >does not destroy Silverback. This would be true for a card that would simply destroy the Silverback (such as Desert Twister or Blaze). ----- [David Zhou, asking about Pariah and Treacherous Link] >I want to know what happens when my opponent activates his Pestilence for 5 >damage what happens to my Phyrexian Negator when it has a Pariah and >aTreacherous Link on him. Assuming it's your Pariah and Link and your opponent activated the Pestilence 5 times in response to each other: Well, you have a choice. Either you apply the Pariah to the event first, or you apply the Link first. If you choose the Pariah first, the 1 damage on you will be moved to the Negator then the 2 damage on the Negator will be moved to you, so you'll take 2 damage and the Negator will take nothing. If you apply the Link first, the Negator will be dealt 2 damage and you won't take any. You'll then have to sacrifice 2 permanents (same reason, different order). This is then repeated until all 5 resolutions of the Pestilence resolve, or something gets sacrificed. ----- [Ernie Miller, asking about Animate Land and Eradicate] >My opponent played "Animate Land" on my Swamp that was in play. Then, he >played "Eradicate" on that Swamp. He claimed that it removed ALL of my >swamps. That's correct. Nasty, isn't it. >I guess the logical question would be, "If I had a LLanowar Elf that I Giant >Growthed, and it was Eradicated, the Eradicate would apply to all Elves, >Right?" Right. Eradicate only cares about the name of the card, nothing else.
