(see http://www.mtg.ag.ru/other/ for details of the April 1st hoax) FOLLOWUP TO PREVIOUS REPLIES: ======================================================================= *PANTS* Coffin Queen has a combined state-triggered and normal-triggered ability. This caught me out somewhat, as nobody told me that we were allowed to do those. If it leaves play before its ability resolves, the creature will come into play, and then be removed from the game as a triggered ability. If it untaps before its ability resolves, the creature won't be removed until the Queen untaps the next time. The wording is blatantly horrible. I'll check upstairs to see if it's what they really want. *PANTS* Pack Hunt looks in the Library, not in the Graveyard. I was thinking of "Pants Hunt", which does look in the graveyard (and anywhere else if it's a real emergency). :-) [Strategy topics on the list] I think that most people will be agreeable to the following solution: Personal strategy posts ("Please help me with my deck") are allowed, but all replies to strategy posts on MTG-L should be in private e-mail, not to the list. Such posts aren't encourage, though, and people should still be pointed towards MTG-STRATEGY-L as a better place to ask. If there are any strong objections, or suggestions for improvements, then please suggest them soon, then I'll put the policy change into the FAQ. SHORT ANSWERS: ======================================================================= ** Regeneration: |419.6b Regeneration is a destruction-replacement effect. The key |word "instead" doesn't appear on the card but is implicit in its |definition. "Regenerate [permanent]" means "The next time |[permanent] would be destroyed this turn, instead remove all damage |from it, tap it, and (if it's in combat) remove it from combat." You can play regeneration abilities at any time. The above will happen when the creature actually is about to die, not when the ability is played or resolves. ** If a creature blocks a Trampler, and regenerates before combat damage goes onto the Stack, all the Trample damage goes through to the defending player (because regeneration removes creatures from combat, so the total toughness of the Trampler's blockers is 0). There is no option to assign combat damage to the regenerator in this case. ** There is no difference between "Prevent all damage that would be dealt to Dave" and "Reduce all damage that would be dealt to Dave to zero" (except that we don't use the second template anymore. Note that "no difference" means that they work _exactly_ the same. ** Play with the Masques wording for Afterlife, not the Mirage one. LONG ANSWERS: ======================================================================= [Ole Kofoed Hansen, asking about Lava Bursting a Cho-Manno] >Just one question. If something gave the Cho-Manno, Revolutionary regeneration, >would it be able to survive? Yes. Regeneration doesn't prevent or "redirect" damage, it just removes the damage that is there, and prevents the destruction. So, it's possible to Regenerate from a Lava Burst. ----- [Thomas Burris, asking about Echo] >If I have a dominating licid enchanting my opponents echo creature, and >during my upkeep I put echo on the stack then pop off the licid. Does the >critter die? If the owner can pay for the echo, can he save him? Only you can pay the Echo cost. If you choose not to, you are told to sacrifice the creature, but you can't, because you don't control it. The creature will always live. ----- [Luciano Carbajo, asking about intentionally drawing] >I organize magic tournaments and sometimes I have this situation in the final >round of the swiss portion of the tournament, before cutting to the top8: The >players who have a chance to enter the top8 do not decide whether they play or >intentionally draw, and start watching what other players do, so the players >who first decide what they are doing are in a worse condition that the >ones who wait for the others to decide. What you need to do here is politely tell people to start playing, and to ignore other people's matches. There is some advantage in waiting to intentionally draw until other matches have finished, but there is also a risk - you might be losing by that point, and your opponent might not accept the draw. >What I do sometimes is have all the players who have chances to enter >the top8 write down on a paper if the want to draw or play. Then, when >the pairings are done, if both players wrote "draw", the match is an >intentional draw, if one of them or both of them wrote "play", then >they have to play. This isn't allowable anymore - players are allowed to ID at any time before results are handed in. You can't force two players to play - if they want to draw at any time, they're allowed to. Tournament Organisers and Head Judges _cannot_ alter this rule - they must follow the Standard Floor Rules. Common sense rules here, of course. If a situation comes up that isn't completely covered by the rules, it may be necessary to bend the rules - for example, after announcing that all players must play with mobile phones switched off, I had a player come up to me whose mother was ill in hospital. I made an exception for that player. ----- [Gabriel Morris, asking about Priority] >When a player plays a spell in his main phase, which player receives the >priority to answer first, him or the opponent? The same player gets Priority again. After a spell resolves, the Active Player gets priority. These situations are _different_. >My opponent has a Zuran Orb in play, and he is trying to play a Balance and >sacrifice all his lands. The problem is that I have a counter. There are two >possibilities: > >1.- If he has the priority to anser to the balance, then I can wait to see >if he sacrifices his lands before deciding to counter it. This is correct. But, if he says "I Pass", then _you_ now have Priority. If you counter it, he saves his lands. If you don't counter it, then it resolves (because both players have Passed). >Suppose we are beggining to resolve the effect on a stack and there are >several of them. What happens if the resolution of the first effect triggers >and ability? Does this newly generated effect go to the stack immediately or >does it wait until this stack is empty?. It goes onto the Stack immediately - it will resolve before anything else already on the Stack resolves. >I have heard that if you disenchant an Illusions of Grandeur as a response >of the CIP ability then the owner first loses 20 lifes and then gains 20 >(probably dying in the interim). Is this correct? That's correct. ----- [Juhan Kaldre, asking about regeneration] >Albino Troll (3/3 regen) is in play and it is dealt 1 point of >damage. Then Massacre is cast. Can Troll regenerate? Yes, of course. You can play the ability at any time. When Massacre resolves, if there's a Regeneration shield there, the Troll will regenerate, and the 1 damage will be erased. >OK, I'll use a chance and drop another question. When I cast Enlightened >Tutor and I do not find an enchantment or artifact from my library, I just >shuffle. But can I say that I did not find them, although I have some >enchantments in my library? Yes, that's correct. For cards that search for a type of card, you can choose not to find what you're looking for. If it just says "search your library for a card", you have to find a card. ----- [Rob and Dawn Allertson, asking about rulebook versions] >Mine is the April 99 version. Didn't realize that there was an update. >I guess that answers my question. BTW, is there anything else in there >that is that much different from the April version? I don't want to >have to redownload and reread it if it is not worth it. Look at: http://www.wizards.com/dci/judge/Rulebook_Version_Changes.asp for the differences between versions of the Comprehensive Rulebook. ----- [David Stroud, conspiring with a Tetravus] >Here's the deal: Donate/Conspiracy on Tetravite. For those of you who >haven't a clue what I'm talking about, Tetravus is a 6 mana artifact >creature 1/1. It has flying, and gets 3 +1/+1 counters as it comes into >play. You can remove any number of those tokens to make 1/1 flying >Tetravites, which can't be enchanted. > >As Tetravus's final ability, it can sacrifice any Tetravite in play >REGARDLESS OF WHO CONTROLS THEM to put a +1/+1 counter on it. > >Get my drift? So, if I cast Conspiracy on Tetravites, and Donate it, can I >sack all my opponent's creatures? Yep, that works. Nice combo. Naming "Reflection" with a Spirit Mirror is nice, too. ----- [Mat Brown, asking about circles] >The Circle controller's opponent has a creature of the appropriate color. >The Circle controller activates the Circle choosing that creature. If the >creature's controller later changes the color of his creature with, for >example, a Distorting Lens, and attacks with it, will the Circle prevent the >damage? The creature is no longer of the appropriate color. The Circle won't prevent the damage, as it's not of the correct colour. Note that the Rules Team is currently discussing this rule. If there are any changes to it, they will go into the April Rules Team Rulings post. >Would it be any different if the color was changed in response to the >announcement of the Circle's ability? Yes - you couldn't choose that creature for the Circle. ----- [Da Twink Daddy, asking about Tetravus] >It would seem to me that if any tetravite tokens were in play and the >tetravus wasn't, they could be enchanted. That's not correct. The "can't be enchanted" is part of the ability that created the Tetravites, not a separate ability of the Tetravus. >Even if the wording they have on there now make the 'can't be >enchanted' last after the tetravus is gone, it also makes it to where, >after the ability is played, all permanents of sub-type tetravite can't >be enchanted. That's correct. This is probably a sub-optimal wording. I'll pass it back to the Rules Team. ----- [Tisu Stefan, posting spam] >The Chinese New Year Game Don't post spam to this list. Ever.
