However, if you get to a point where you come up with a suggestion for the copy card rules, then feel free to tell me. FOLLOWUP TO PREVIOUS REPLIES: ======================================================================= [PANTS: Ingo Warnke, correcting me on Show and Tell] > 7) Show and Tell does let the opponent know what card active player chooses > from their hand before opponent chooses their own card. Yeah. This one sneaked past me. It's the official ruling. SHORT ANSWERS: ======================================================================= ** Yawgmoth's Bargain is Banned in Extended because it's possible to create a deck that will win on turn 1 over 60% of the time. LONG ANSWERS: ======================================================================= [Tod Tinlin, asking about Modal spells] >When I play a Misdirection on a spell that is Modal, do I have the option of >changing the mode when changing the target of the spell? No, you don't. You can only change the target. And, to answer several other questions on a similar subject, Disenchant is _not_ Modal, as it does not use the text "Choose one -" (all modal spells use this text). ----- [Tom Baake, asking about combat] >Suppose the next situation appears: Player 1 controls a tranquil grove. >Player 2 controls an opalescence and a random global enchantment. Now >player 1 attacks with the tranquil grove and activates its ability after >attackers are declared. Hmm, now we've got an attacking enchantment. Does >it get removed from combat immediately? Yes, it gets removed from combat as soon as it stops being a creature. ----- [Steven Tice, asking about Unglued 2] >Does this mean that they do not intend to print Unglued 2 this summer? No, there's no intention of printing Unglued 2 this summer - they can't print enough Pokemon as it is. They're trying desperately to stop stores charging over RRP for Pokemon, by printing enough cards, but they just can't. (There are _no_ Magic cards printed in the US anymore, to give you an indication of how big Pokemon is) ----- [Mat Brown, asking about copy card weirdness] >I am still concerned that "most basic state" could be subject to interpretation, >since it isn't formally defined, like "initial characteristics" is. The simplest >solution would be to define "most basic state." Easy: For all cards other than copy cards, the most basic state is the physical card. For Copy cards, it's the physical cards, plus any changes made by copy abilities. ----- [Charles Bienvenue, asking about playing spells] >I cast a Radiant Archangel with a Diplomatic Immunities and my friend >said there a fast effect phase between the time after i cast my radiant >and before i my diplomatic and my friend cast a Afterlife on my >radiant. Your friend is right. He can play Instants in response to your Diplomatic Immunity, so he can do the Afterlife to kill the Archangel. This will cause the Diplomatic Immunity to be countered, as it no longer has a legal target. ----- [Mat Brown, asking about copy cards] >> Ruling E.4.2 (Since there are no official Copy Card rules) Copy cards >> read the initial characteristics (see Rule K.6) of the card or >> token, ignoring any changes made by other spells and abilities. >> These characteristics become the initial characteristics of the >> copy. [WotC Rules Team 98/03/31] > >Oh my. That does contradict Paul's model, doesn't it. No, actually, it doesn't. It's the 5th Edition rules version. At the moment, you can do whatever you want with copy cards. We are not taking any trouble to be consistent, and we are not too bothered about the implications of any model we suggest you use, or answers we give. You should definitely not try to generalise any copy card answers to other cards. What I'm trying to do is to give answers that people can use, even if they don't match up with what the final rules will say. If people would stop asking about copy cards until the final rules came out, I'd be very happy (but I don't expect that to happen). Since the chance of it actually mattering for anything other than casual play is infinitessimally small (why play the Dopp when you could play Morphling), I think this is reasonable. ----- [Bob Terrell, asking about stuff] >> >> >Also, Any word on furture sets after Nemisis? >> > >> >Is it going to have a story? Is there going to be a storybook in it? Is the >> >story going to be something other than "Rescue Weatherlight Crew"? >> >> Yes, and yes. > >I asked three questions. You gave two answers. I take it you skipped the first >one and the answers to the second two questions are yes? I missed the middle question, actually, sorry. There will be a book about Nemesis, but I don't think the preconstructed decks or anything will include storybooks, but they might. The WotC website should be able to tell you. ----- [Jeff Jordan, asking lots of copy questions] >I'm not sure what frame of reference Paul is using when he says "the >assumption was." That was not the proposal that *seemed* to be >accepted by the 6E rules discussion group (i.e., the one where Beth >said "I like this. [In the next draft] of the 6E rules ... I'll >support this version.") It was the assumption between myself and Dave DeLaney while we were discussing how to deal with the problem of not having any copy card rules. I suggested having it copy the current stats, he pointed out a million and seven problems, I said "oh, yeah". >Anyway, I want to know how Paul thinks these two types of effects act >differently, since he has separated them *after* the rules were written >that assumed they were the same. So here are a series of permanent- >type-changer and copy-card questions. Not all are interesting, but >they lay groundwork. What do you get if: While I will answer these, take the answers with a pinch of salt. >1) Use Ashnod's Transmogrant on a Grizzly Bear. 3/3 Artifact Bear. Before I go on, I'll point out that the wording on Ashnod's Transmogrant is messed up - it should make the permanent an artifact in addition to any other permanent types, not make it into an artifact creature. I'll point this out, and I'm answering these as if that wording was in place. >2) Clone #1. Or Copy Artifact it. A) 2/2 Bear B) 2/2 Enchantment Creature Bear >3) Animate a Treetop Village with its own power. 3/3 Green creature. >4) Cast a Doppelganger targeting #3. Doppelganger of a non-animated village. >5) Use Chaoslace on #4. Red Dopp-village >6) Animate #5 with its own ability. Red Dopp-village 3/3 Land-Creature >7) Copy an awakened Opal Caryatid with #6 (6 is done in upkeep). Red Dopp-village 3/3 Land-creature (_not_ an enchantment until the end of the turn). If you waited for #6 to wear off, you'd come out with an Enchantment, with the Dopp's ability, and the Caryatid's ability. Not an Artifact or a creature. >8) Your opponent plays a creature. What happens to #7? Becomes a 2/2 creature, with the Dopp's ability (still got the Caryatid's ability). >9) Use Ashnod's Transmogrant on #8, and then Copy Artifact it. The Copy Artifact becomes: Enchantment, with the Dopp's ability, and the Caryatid's ability. Not an Artifact or a creature. >10) Your opponent plays another creature. What happens to #9? Same as in #8, exactly. There's no difference between the two cases. Tune in next week, for completely different answers to the same questions.
