Ho much life do I gain: You will gain either 2 or 1 life, depending on how he decides to use the shields. His best play would be to prevent 2 damage from the 3/3 creature, and you'd gain 1 life. ----- [Brian Rodgers, asking about abilities] >My opponent plays a Rishadan Cutpurse. The text on Rishadan Cutpurse >(from the Mercadian Masques expansion) reads, "When Rishadan Cutpurse >comes into play, each opponent sacrifices a permanent unless he or she >pays 1." I have a card in play that will give me a benefit if I >sacrifice it. My question is this: could I sacrifice that card per the >instructions on Rishadan Cutpurse and get the benefit from the >sacrifice as well? It depends what the card text is. If it's "When(ever) you sacrifice this card, gain 1 life", then you will get the benefit - this is a triggered ability, and will happen whenever the permanent is sacrificed. If it's written "Sacrifice ~this~: gain 1 life", then you won't get the benefit. This is an activated ability, and can only be played by you choosing to activate it. Just sacrificing it won't cause its ability to be put onto the Stack. >Also, could I put Rishadan Cutpurse into play and then immediately >sacrifice it to comply with the text on the card? No. The Cutpurse tells your opponents to sacrifice a permanent, not you. So, you don't sacrifice anything. ----- [The Chans, asking a few questions] > I just wanted to ask a few questions. Does anyone know where I can >get my hands on a *complete* cardlist (of every card existing, or at least >the cards from the expansions) with *no* repeats at all? A list of every existing card other than Masques should be present in the Magic Encyclopedia. Magic Suitcase should also have a complete list. > Does anyone know >if it's possible for me to find the artwork of specific cards on the Net >(for instance, if I wanted to see what a particular card looked like, I >could search for it)? Here, the Magic encyclopedia is definitely your best bet. As for on the net, yavapai.ccgnews.com used to have all the pictures - I'm not sure if they do anymore, though. >Also, a few rules questions: How long does summoning sickness last? Until the start of your next turn. It lasts all the way through your opponent's turn. >Does it still apply on your opponent's turn for a creature that you played >on your turn just before? If your creature is affected by summoning >sickness, can you play its nontapping abilities (eg. sac Thrull Surgeon)? Yes. Summoning Sickness only affects abilities of that card with the {T} symbol in the activation cost (and attacking, of course). >And also, can you put lands into play with Limited Resources and 10 >or more lands in play if you use a Skyshroud Ranger, of Silverglade >Pathfinder, or Rampant Growth? Yes. Limited Resources only prevents players playing lands, not putting them into play using spells or abilities. ----- [Daniel Dunphy, asking about Cloud of Faeries] > Last weekend, I took my Suicide Black deck down to a semilocal >tournament. My first matchup was against someone playing the Blaze/Stroke >version of Enchantress. In our second game, as he was getting the engine >started, he cast Yawgmoth's Will to get access to the untapping effects and >the Blaze in his graveyard. He then tapped out and spent his last blue mana, >leaving several colorless floating, to cast Cloud of Faeries from his >graveyard. He starts to untap his land, and I tell him he can't untap the >land since Cloud of Faeries has errata on it to only work when played from >your hand. He claims that since he cast it, its CIP ability will work just >fine. We argue for a bit and then call the judge over. The judge rules that >since Yawgmoth's Will says you may play cards in your graveyard as if they >were in your hand casting spells out of the graveyard 'as if they were in >your hand' meets the errata of 'if you played ~this~ from your hand'. Who's >right? You are. Unless the Cloud is physically played from your hand, you aren't allowed to untap the lands. Yawgmoth's Will allows you to play cards as though they were in your hand, but that doesn't mean that they actually are in your hand, so it won't allow you to use the Faerie's ability. ----- [Brian Rogers, asking about tokens] >Can one sacrifice a token creature just as one would sacrifice any >other permanent, or is the idea to sacrifice a creature card instead >of a creature type? Any help would be appreciated. If the card says "sacrifice a permanent", then yes. If it says "sacrifice a card", then no. This is a common use for tokens. ----- [Sean Droms, asking about Pearl Medallion] >Ok, what if I had a Pearl Medalion (or what ever the white one is called, >I'm just guessing), and you had a Jhoval Queen (Converted mana cost is 6) >and I had the Rebel that lets you search for a Rebel with CC of five? >Does the Pearl Medalion lower the CC so I can get it? No. The Medallions allow you to pay {1} less when you're playing a white spell. They don't affect the spell's mana cost at all, and have no interaction at all with any of the abilities of the Rebels. ----- [Emerson Pereira, asking about Academy Rector] >I need some clarification about the Planar Void / Academy Rector >timing rules... Suppose that I have Planar Void in play, and you >sacrifice Academy Rector during your turn to Phyrexian Tower, for >example... Do you go search your library for an enchantmet? No. You go "D'oh, I messed up". When you sacrifice the Rector, both triggered abilities go onto the Stack. Since it's my turn, I have to put the Rector's ability onto the Stack first, then the Void's. So, it's not in the graveyard when its ability comes to resolve, and therefore it can't be removed from there to allow you to search for an enchantment. >What happens if my opponent sac the Rector during my turn? You go "didn't think I could do _that_, did you?". The Void's ability goes onto the Stack first, so the Rector's ability resolves first, and you get to search for the enchantment. ----- [Ron Shortt, asking about Contamination] >Is it possible for me to use the Nether Shadow with Contamination in the >following way at the beginning of my upkeep: > >1. Place contamination's upkeep on the stack. >2. Place the Nether Shadow ability on the stack (assuming it is satisfied > with three other creature cards above it in the graveyard). >3. Resolve the Nether Shadow ability and return it to play. >4. Resolve the Contamination's upkeep and sacrifice the Nether Shadow. > >Could I do the same thing with an Ashen Ghoul? Yes, and yes (the Ghoul's ability is activated, but will still work). Works with Nether Spirit too. ----- [Jeff Jordan, asking about combat] >>** If you have a Trampling Thorn Elemental, it can deal 7 damage to your >> opponent, or up to 7-X damage to your opponent (where X is the >> toughness of the blocking creature). You can't deal 1 damage to a 2/2 >> blocker and 6 to your opponent (all this assumes undamaged blockers, >> of course). > >Yes, but the question is "How does this happen?" They're all static abilities, producing continuous effects that modify the rules of the game. So, the normal "attacking player assigns damage to creatures any way you like" becomes "attacking player assigns damage to creatures any way you like and if you put enough on each, you can do some to your opponent too, oh and if you don't feel like that, you can just ignore the creatures and do the whole lot to her." > Which of the following >methods (or another?) is followed after all players pass in the "declare >blockers" step. And to make it even more interesting, say the one >blocker has banding, since Beth has ruled on that case without stating >the reasons: Including Banding into the mix (another static ability which modifies the rules), and the rule for combat damage becomes: "_defending_ player assigns damage to creatures any way you like and if you put enough on each, you can do some to your opponent too, oh and if you don't feel like that, you can just ignore the creatures and do the whole lot to her." >2) The rules for damage assignment are different than normal for this > encounter. The defender gets to make all decisions about it > (banding), the damage may be split between blocker and defender > (trample), and all the damage may optionally go on the defender (TE). Correct. >In case 2, you have not defined in what order these modifications are >performed. Beth's ruling for TE and banding implies that the banding >modification is made before the TE's and trample. Why? The modifications are made in timestamp order, as they do not depend on each other. Of course, this is irrelevant, as they don't interact with each other either. So, the defending player chooses whether or not the creature will deal damage "as though it is unblocked", and then, if not, chooses how to deal the trample damage.
