Anyone who has paid much attention to this list over the last (can it be this long?) five years has seen several of my replies. Usually, I'm the one stirring up trouble by pointing out inconsistencies in the rules and rulings. I've been a thorn in the side of three different NetReps, and now you all get to take aim at me. Would it help if I ask you to be gentle? I don't expect much to change from Paul's style of replies; especially not at first. I'm copying his format for now, since I like to go with what works, but I'm open to any suggestions if you think of ways to make them easier to read. Paul Barclay has just completed the longest tenure of any mtg-l NetRep, although Beth Moursund's two terms add up to more. He has contributed much to the game of Magic, and hopefully will continue to do so in his new role, whatever it is. All I know is that he will be involved. Maybe we should call him "NetRep Emeritus." :) SHORT ANSWERS: ======================================================================= ** You can keep two creatures after a Cataclysm if one is an artifact creature. You can keep two Opalescences by choosing one as an enchantment and one as a creature. ** Spells don't have activation costs. Those that appear to have one received errata to say "As an additional cost to play ~this~, pay.." ** You can't target a creature you just Flung at something, because it is no longer in play. ** Creature spells can't be cast in response to a Power Sink to use up your mana, unless they say "Play this card as an instant." ** Triggered abilities are not played, and are not affected by City of Solitude. ** Old "mana source" spells, like Dark Ritual, are now instants. They can be countered like any other instants. ** Rebound can only target a spell that uses the words "target player" or "target opponent" in its text, or an "Enchant Player" spell. The word "you" refers to a spell or permanent's controller, not a target. ** There are exactly two "Enchant Player" cards. In Unglued, of course. ** Static abilities on face-down cards work just as if the card were face up, but you don't have to tell your opponent what they do until a situation comes up that needs the information. Then, you only need to tell them the result. So if you have a face-down Ali from Cairo, you don't tell your opponents about it until you take as much (or more) damage then you have life left. And all you tell them then is that your life total is now 1. ** Triggered abilities from attacking or blocking will resolve before any combat damage is assigned, even trample damage. ** The Silver Rule of Magic states, as it always has, that destroying a permanent will not stop an ability it already put on the stack. Destroying a Kris Mage will not stop its damage. ** Playing and resolving a regeneration ability does not tap the creature or remove it from combat. That happens when the creature actually regenerates from a destruction. ** Under Classic Rules, there is no such thing as an "upkeep cost." In Fifth Edition, not having paid one could prevent an ability from being played. This is no longer true. LONG ANSWERS: ======================================================================= [David Zhou asking about simultaneous triggers] > What happen if sumone uses Diabolic Servitude and brings a creature > into play, and then i use an abduction on that creature, then i > terrored it. What happens to the creature.(is it removed or comes > back into play) Depends on whose turn it is when you play the Terror. On your turn, your Abduction will go on the stack first and resolve last. Diabolic Servitude will put the card into play under its owner's control, and return to its owner's hand. On the Servitude's owner's turn, the card will be removed from the game, but the Servitude will still return to its owner's hand. ----- [Denise Keppel, confused on terminology] > What is the difference between kill, bury, distroy? When can a fog > of nats be regenerated? If I attack a fog of nats with a singur > vampire, do I get a 1/1 counter on it? And finally, does a creature > removed from the graveyard get to keep any counters on it? "Kill" is not an official Magic term, and a player using it could mean any of several terms or phrases. "Destroy" means to take a permanent and put it into the graveyard. Destruction can usually be prevented by regenerating. "Bury" is an obsolete term that means "destroy and can't regenerate." "Sacrifice" means about the same as bury, but is usually used in a different context that matters more to the people who write the cards than to the players. Any counters on a permanent are removed as it is put in the graveyard; so no, you can't pull it back out with the counters. You can prevent a creature's destruction by playing a regeneration effect on it and having it resolve before the destruction effect does. Since the creature is never put in the graveyard, the counters are not removed. Also, no ability that triggers on a destruction, like Sengir Vampire's, will go off if it regenerates. ----- [Alex asking about Booby Trap] > If I cast booby trap and choose an opponent and a card, could I then > donate it to that opponent so being able to use Beebles, for > example. Does the Booby Trap's ability still work and will it still > force the player to reveal his cards and deal them 10 damage? Booby Trap doesn't care if it changes controllers. It will continue to reveal the cards drawn by the player chosen as it came into play. If that player draws the named card, an ability controlled by Booby Trap's current controller triggers. The controller must sacrifice the artifact, if possible. If it is sacrificed, it will deal its damage to the chosen player. ----- [Ed Phillips noticing an old template] > I notice that before errata, a lot of Instants, Sorceries and > Interrupts have wordings like the one for Meditate: > > Meditate > 2U > Instant > Skip your next turn: Draw 4 cards. > > Now the errata'd text is something like: > > Draw 4 cards. You skip your next turn. > > So, does this mean that any cards printed in this "cost: effect" > fashion (Instants, Interrupts, Sorceries) are immediately suspect > and are/should be errata'd to work similarly? They have global errata, yes, but not all like Meditate. All pre- Classic instants and sorceries that used the ": " template were errata'ed in Oracle. Most got changed to "As an additional cost to play ~this~, pay .; ". For some, like Meditate, the isn't really a cost. It isn't "paid" immediately. It is a delayed effect, and the Classic wording reflects that. ----- [Ed Phillips on Harvest Mage] > G, Tap, Discard a card from your hand: Until end of turn, > if you tap a land for mana, it produces one mana of any > color instead of its normal type and amount. > > Can I choose the color when I tap a land or when HM's ability > resolves? Harvest Mage creates a replacement effect on *you*, so that if you tap a land for mana, the mana production is replaced with "make one of a color you choose now." For instance, if you tap a Rhystic Cave, you get to choose a new color after everybody gets a chance to pay off the Rhystic, if nobody paid.
